Journey Mode

Journey ModeProgression

what journey mode is

Journey Mode is a sandbox layer bolted onto the normal game rather than a separate game. You pick it on both the character and the world screen, and the two only ever work with each other. New characters start with upgraded versions of the usual kit plus gear nobody else gets, including Fledgling Wings and a Finch Staff with the minion already out. Enemies run at half Classic difficulty by default. Everything else lives in the Power Menu, which sits under the inventory slots and replaces the crafting panel.

research and duplication

The core loop is research. Feeding an item into the research slot destroys it, and once you have fed in the required number that item can be pulled from the duplication menu forever, in any quantity. Shift clicking sends items straight there, and the trash slot doubles as one once the count is already met. Requirements vary by type: weapons and accessories usually want one, materials want far more. Counts belong to the character rather than the world, so a second character starts from zero. Duplicated items never carry a modifier, which is the one reason to keep a well rolled weapon in hand instead of researching it. The menu doubles as unlimited storage: anything fully unlocked can be trashed and pulled back later.

researching things the cheap way

Research counts attach to the item, not to what it is made of, and Shimmer decrafts most things back into parts. That gap works in your favor.

  • Ten Life Crystals are needed to unlock the crystal itself, but a single Heart Lantern unlocks the lantern, and one lantern decrafts back into crystals.
  • Golden critters want three each, while a cage holding one wants one. The same trick covers the Truffle Worm and the Prismatic Lacewing.
  • Souls want twenty five each, while the bottled version of the same soul wants one.
  • Coins want one hundred at every denomination, which makes the climb from copper to platinum slow but finite. Once platinum is unlocked, a Coin Gun has infinite premium ammunition, which is absurd in early Hardmode.

the difficulty slider

The Enemy Difficulty Slider runs from 0.5x to 3x. Half is the Journey default, 1x matches Classic, 2x matches Expert and 3x matches Master, and moving it switches on every rule and every exclusive drop belonging to that tier immediately. Enemies already on screen change their AI and their loot tables on the spot. Town NPC damage doubles once the slider passes 2x, worth knowing before you rely on the town to defend itself. Debuff durations ignore the slider. The exploitable detail is that an enemy takes its stats when it spawns and its drop table when it dies, so you can summon a boss at half difficulty, fight something soft, then push the slider to 3x before the killing blow and collect Master drops.

time, weather and spawns

Time can be frozen, snapped to dawn, noon, dusk or midnight, or run anywhere from normal speed up to twenty four times faster. Fallen Stars stop falling while time is frozen, and freezing also blocks random events like Slime Rain, though Music Boxes still record. Stepping past a preset counts as a day or night passing, so boss and event rolls happen and the Angler hands out a new quest. Sleeping in a Bed multiplies with the 24x setting for a combined 120x, compressing a full day into about twelve seconds. That is the fastest way to force a Traveling Merchant visit, though he can leave before you reach him, so freeze time when he arrives.

The spawn rate slider covers 0x to 10x. At zero the world goes quiet but not empty: bosses, statue spawns, the Old Ones Army, tombstone ghosts, critters from plants and bees from broken hives all still appear. The Dungeon Guardian is the one thing that will not.

godmode and reach

Godmode removes damage and knockback outright and gives unlimited breath. Mana is not truly unlimited, it simply regenerates faster than you can spend it, so a weapon that costs more than your entire mana pool still refuses to fire: a fresh character with twenty mana cannot use the Nebula Arcanum no matter what the menu promises. Debuffs still land, they just do nothing. Increased placement range, on by default, expands your reach from a 10 by 7 tile box to 37 by 33, which is transformative for building and quietly excellent for lighting: hold Torches with smart cursor and one pass lights half a cavern.

infection spread and what survives conversion

The biome spread toggle stops the Corruption, Crimson and Hallow expanding. It does not reverse anything already converted, and it does not stop the diagonal stripes that generate when the Wall of Flesh dies, so switch it off early if a clean world matters. Several settings survive conversion to another difficulty through an external editor: frozen time, locked weather and the spread toggle stick, while difficulty and spawn rate revert.

multiplayer and achievements

Fully researched items are shared between teammates, but only for research done while both are online, and never retroactively. Anyone absent has to research it themselves. Achievements all unlock normally in Journey worlds with one exception: Extra Life needs a Hardcore character, which cannot exist here.
