reading a drop chance
A listed rate is rolled fresh on every kill, so nothing is owed to you after a dry streak. For a rough target: killing as many enemies as the denominator of the rate gives you about a 63 percent chance of seeing it at least once, and about 2.3 times that many gets you to 90 percent. For a 1 in 500 item like the Rod of Discord that works out near 1,150 kills before you have any right to feel cheated.
expert moves the loot into a bag
In Expert and Master worlds bosses hand out a treasure bag instead of scattering loot. The bag carries the usual drops plus one item that exists nowhere else, and in multiplayer everyone who landed a hit gets their own complete bag, so a group kill is far more generous than a solo one. Trophies still drop on the floor separately.
keys are a long, dull farm
Biome keys come off any coin-dropping enemy at a very low rate, and the biome that counts is the one you are standing in, not the one the enemy belongs to. They stay locked until Plantera dies. Build the farm in the safest qualifying biome you have rather than the one that thematically matches the weapon you want.
