Pylons11
All 11 pylons in Terraria 1.4.5. Pylons are one-per-biome teleporters sold by your town NPCs; place one in each area you settle and you can hop between them for free. 1.4.5 adds two new ones, the Underworld and Aether pylons.
Forest PylonForestSold by vendors living on the surface away from every other biome, so your starter town usually offers it first.
Cavern PylonCavernSold by vendors housed below the surface, as long as no other biome overrides the area.
Mushroom PylonMushroomSold by vendors housed in a Glowing Mushroom biome; the Truffle counts once he moves in.
Underworld PylonUnderworldNew in 1.4.5. Sold by vendors housed down at Underworld depth, lava and all.
Aether PylonAetherNew in 1.4.5. Not sold by anyone: drop any other pylon into Shimmer and it transmutes into this one. It only works placed in the Aether.
Universal PylonUniversalSold by the Zoologist once the Bestiary is 100% complete. Works everywhere and needs no NPCs nearby. How pylons unlock
Almost every vendor sells the pylon for the biome you are both standing in: open any shop while at least two town NPCs are nearby and the local pylon appears at the bottom of the stock. Only the Traveling Merchant, the Skeleton Merchant and the Tavernkeep never sell them, and no vendor sells one while you are in the Corruption or Crimson. Happiness does not gate the sale anymore; that requirement was dropped back in 1.4.4, so older guides overcomplicate this.
A placed pylon activates when two or more town NPCs live near it (town pets count), and it only works inside its own biome, which is why there is one per type per world. Teleporting is free, but you have to be standing next to a pylon to jump to another one, so the network needs at least two. The Universal Pylon is the exception to the biome and NPC rules: it works anywhere with nobody around. The Aether Pylon is never sold at all, it comes from shimmering any other pylon.
