Mounts compared
Terraria 1.4.5 has 64 mount slots and 63 of them have a summoning item, listed here sorted by ground run speed. Dash speed is the top speed while dashing, jump height is in tiles, and flight time is how long flying and hovering mounts stay airborne. Stats are taken directly from the game.
what riding one changes
A mount takes over your movement completely. Your own speed and jump bonuses stop applying and the mount's numbers replace them, though extra jumps from accessories still work on the ground ones. You keep full use of weapons and tools while riding, with the drill as the one exception, and the summon item is never consumed.
the split that matters
Ground mounts are early travel and stop mattering the moment you have decent wings. Flying is the real prize, and five of them never run out of it: the Cosmic Car Key, The Black Spot, the Witch's Broom, the Drill Containment Unit and the Shrimpy Truffle. Endless flight reshapes boss fights more than any single accessory. A few mounts also deal damage, either by contact, which scales with your summon damage, or by shooting, which ignores your damage bonuses entirely.
minecarts are the other half
Carts count as mounts but need track under them. Every cart except the wooden default shares one top speed, so the choice is decorative until you use the Minecart Upgrade Kit, which raises speed across all of them, bolts on a laser and adds defense while moving. Ramming enemies hurts them more the faster you are going, and at full speed the knockback is enormous, so a long straight line of track through a farm is a weapon in its own right.
