how the bolts behave
Each use throws out a spread that fans away from you before turning toward whatever is closest. There is a short beat before the tracking kicks in, so firing point blank at something already on top of you often wastes the volley. Give the bolts a little room and they curve in on their own with almost no aiming from you.
they last longer when they have work
A bolt with nothing to chase burns out fast. One that locks onto a target gets its clock topped back up, so the same shot that would fizzle in an empty room keeps working through a crowd. Ricochets extend that too, since a bolt that bounces back into the arena finds a new target instead of vanishing into the terrain. Fighting in an enclosed space is measurably better than fighting in open sky.
the pierce falls off
Every body a bolt goes through takes a bigger cut out of the next hit, and the third one ends it. Against a single large target none of that matters and this is close to the strongest thing you can be holding at this point. Against a wall of small enemies the tail end of each bolt is doing very little, so keep something built for crowds on the bar as well.
