you do not pick the rocket

The first press fires a color at random, and holding the button afterward walks it through the rainbow in order and loops. The seven colors fly differently: some drop hard, some drift, some curve away from where you pointed. You cannot select one, so treat this as a spray rather than a precision launcher. The scatter is the reason it misses and also the reason it covers ground. Roughly half your shots do not consume a rocket, which is what keeps it affordable to hold the trigger.

hit the enemy, not the wall

There is a large gap between a rocket that detonates on an enemy and one that detonates on terrain. Enemy hits produce the full blast and damage everything standing in it. Block hits produce a blast that only damages one enemy and does not pierce, so firing into the floor beside a crowd throws most of the weapon away. The red rockets are the exception: once they gain their piercing behavior their explosions keep hitting everything, and a direct hit registers twice because the rocket and the blast both land.

what it is for

Ground level swarms. Solar Eclipses and the two moon events are where it looks unfair, because the rockets scatter along the floor and detonate on everything walking at you. The event mini bosses fold quickly under sustained fire, and both Pumpking and the Ice Queen go down in seconds. Against a single flying target it is much weaker, since most of your rockets end up hitting scenery.

digging with it

Loaded with block destroying ammunition it excavates faster than any pickaxe, clearing hundreds of blocks in a few seconds. Rocket IV is the sweet spot, because the larger nuke ammunition does not widen the hole and costs far more to make. What you give up is control. The tunnels are ragged and go wherever the rockets went, so for anything you intend to build inside, a Shroomite Digging Claw or the Drill Containment Unit is still the right tool.

reforging it

Its listed use time and velocity are not the numbers the projectiles actually run on, and neither of those is affected by modifiers, so any roll granting speed or velocity is wasted. That leaves damage, critical strike chance and knockback, which is why Unreal, Godly and Demonic all end up in the same place. Take whichever of the three you land on rather than paying to chase the usual best in slot.

quirks

  • Its own explosions cannot hurt you, so you can fire into a wall at your feet without consequence.
  • The projectiles cannot be reflected, which removes one of the standard risks in the lunar pillars.
  • Liquid rockets keep their damage but lose the ability to place or remove liquid, and cluster ammunition does not produce its extra clusters.
