Mechanically it is a sofa. It fills the chair requirement in a house and sitting on it gives the same fishing and regeneration bump any seat does. The reason to keep one is the drop itself: Skeletron parts with them often enough that most worlds see one, and it is a better trophy than most furniture.

Sit on it beside the Clothier while wearing his Voodoo Doll and you get the Red Hat version of Skeletron instead of the usual one. The fight is the same, the sprite is not. It is also easy to set off by accident if you happen to still be carrying the doll, so watch what you sit on after dark.

It points at a Terraria streamer's second channel, and the tooltip quotes the greeting his videos used to open with. Skeletron drops it because his characters usually end up looking like the Clothier, which is the same reason the Clothier is wrapped up in the alternate summon.
