what the tag actually does
Plantera drops it often enough that one or two kills will usually get you there. The mark it applies is less a damage buff than a trigger: when your minions hit a marked enemy, a small volley of homing petals fires off. Those petals pass straight through blocks and ignore liquids, so cover and water do not protect anything from them.
the timing you have to work around
Petals do not chase immediately. They drift outward for a fraction of a second first, and the enemy that released them is briefly immune while that happens, so they never connect instantly with the thing that spawned them. Against a large boss they curve back in and land. Against something fast the target can be gone by the time they start homing.
how to use it
Only the first enemy in each swing gets marked, and the mark burns off as soon as the petals launch. In a crowd that means constant re tagging while the multihit penalty erodes the damage on everything past the first target. It is a single target whip that happens to have splash, not a crowd clearer.
