Where you put the cursor changes the shape of the volley, not only its direction. Keep the cursor near your character and the lances fan out like a shotgun blast. Push it toward the target and they tighten into something you can snipe with. Most people who dislike this bow are firing it with the cursor parked next to their own feet.

Wooden arrows get rewritten into lances, so the cheapest ammo in the game is a legitimate option and an Endless Quiver turns the bow into a permanent event clearer. The lances pierce, which is exactly what you want during a Pillar or an invasion. For one tough target, feed it Ichor or Venom arrows instead and let the debuff do the work that piercing cannot.

The lances ignore gravity and are not slowed by water, and none of the usual reflecting enemies can turn them back at you. That last point quietly makes this one of the safer things to point at a Biome Mimic.
