how the tag chains

Each swing paints the target with a mark your minions cash in. The first minion or sentry hit on a marked enemy calls in a spectral figure that fires a beam, and if that beam connects it summons another, up to three in a row off one application. A miss ends the chain there. That makes the whip best against a single large target sitting close to your minions, and weakest against a scattered crowd where the beams whiff.

it is secretly a melee weapon

The beams count internally as melee projectiles. They roll against your melee critical chance rather than your summon chance, and they pick up melee flask coatings and the armor penetration from a Sharpening Station. A summoner who has written off melee buffs entirely is throwing away a real portion of this whip's output for no reason.

swinging it

It fires four separate swings per use, which no other whip does, so it feels far more like a melee weapon in the hand than a tagging tool. The mark burns off the instant the visions trigger, so you cannot tag once and coast. Plan on holding the button down for the entire fight.
