how it flies
Vertical speed is the entire selling point. Nothing else in the game climbs like this, and once you are used to it every other pair of wings feels sluggish. It hovers and holds a boost upward as well, so you can park in the air over the Moon Lord and simply stay above anything that tries to reach you.
the up key is a trap
Holding the ascent key does not get you higher. It raises acceleration while capping your top speed, so the fastest climb is a short tap after takeoff and then hands off. People who hold it the whole way up wonder why someone on worse wings is above them.
it fights your dash
Everything that dashes, from the Shield of Cthulhu to the Solar Flare set bonus, gets cut short by how fast the board is already moving you. If a dash keeps dying halfway through, this is why. Horizontal agility is high enough to cause the same problem sideways: you will overshoot a target you were trying to circle until you learn to feather it.
trivia
The shape and the tooltip both point at the old star mascot from public service spots, rainbow trail included. It only comes out of the Moon Lord's bag in Expert, so a Classic run never sees one.
