It only comes off her, and nothing you swing will hurt a town NPC. The answer is to let something else do it: a wired trap, a boulder, a shallow lava puddle, an explosive bunny, or simply leaving her somewhere an enemy can reach. Keep the lava shallow or the drop burns before you can grab it. She moves back in once you have housing free, so a bad roll just means setting the whole thing up again.

Most boomerangs snap around the instant they connect, which cuts the throw short whenever you hit something early. This one keeps pushing forward and eases into the turn on its own schedule, so a hit near your feet still gets the full arc out of it. Once it starts slowing it pierces without limit and cuts through terrain, which is where most of its damage actually lands. It reaches noticeably further than the early wooden and ice throwers, and it comes back fast enough that you are rarely waiting on it.

While you are holding it, it hangs across your back the same way the Mechanic wears hers.
