the ghosts do most of the work

Landing a thrust spawns a glowing bolt somewhere else on the screen, next to a different enemy rather than the one you just stabbed. That bolt runs straight through whatever it passes and does not stop at the first target. In a crowd it means the spear is scoring hits well outside its own reach, on things you have not even looked at yet. Against a lone enemy the bolt just appears where you connected and stacks a second hit on the same target.

the swing is not a normal spear

It sweeps in a curve instead of jabbing straight out, so it covers vertical space a standard spear never touches. That is useful for clipping things standing on a ledge above you or crawling below the platform you are on, and it makes fighting on stairs and uneven ground much less awkward.

where to bring it

Anything that funnels enemies into a line. The event that drops it is the obvious home, since waves arrive from both sides and every thrust is feeding bolts into the far group. A Solar Eclipse works the same way. Against a boss with no adds you are throwing away the better half of the weapon.

naming

It is drawn as a naginata, the long bladed polearm carried by Japanese warrior monks, which lines up with the monk class it belonged to in the crossover it came from. Most of the other weapons from that crossover borrow their names directly. This one does not.
