how the beam behaves
Every shot is a gamble. The laser rolls from a pool of effects each time it connects, and because it survives several hits it can pick up new ones as it travels. Most shots do something forgettable. A few collect enough modifiers at once to delete whatever they touch or fling it off the screen. Only the leading tip of the beam has a hitbox, so a beam that has slowed to a crawl is doing less than it looks like it should.
buy it while you still can
The Traveling Merchant only lists it once an early boss is down, and it is one of two weapons that stop existing the moment your world goes Hardmode. If you plan to spend a while before the Wall of Flesh it will out-damage almost anything else you can carry. If you are already standing at the Wall, skip it. A full Meteor set drops its mana cost to nothing, which is a rare pairing since Meteor builds are usually built around the Space Gun instead.
where not to fire it
The shots wander and can jump position, which is a real problem in the Underground Jungle. A stray hit on a Larva you never saw summons Queen Bee at whatever moment is worst for you.
the name
The shape and the gray body with a red trigger are lifted from the Famicom light gun. The tooltip about it possibly being broken points at how unreliable those guns actually were on real hardware.
