range is the fire rate
The glove flies out, hits something, and comes back. Nothing else happens until it returns, so your damage is entirely a function of how far away the target is. Standing across the room from a boss makes this feel sluggish. Standing on top of something makes it one of the faster weapons you own at that point.
what it is for
Knockback. Anything that walks into your face gets launched, and while it is airborne it is not touching you. That makes it a decent panic button during a Blood Moon or in a corridor packed with Hardmode zombies, and a poor pick against bosses, which mostly ignore knockback and keep their distance anyway.
It only reaches one thing at a time, so a real crowd will eventually push past it. The Golem Fist is the same idea with numbers that hold up later.

Clowns are the source, which ties it to Hardmode Blood Moons. In Remix and Zenith worlds it trades places with the Chain Knife and falls off Cave Bats instead, at much lower power.
