the first fight is in the bad room, the rest do not have to be

You cannot move the altar until you own a pickaxe that bites temple stone, and the first one of those comes off Golem himself. So the opening fight happens where the game put it: a low, narrow chamber with the temple's own enemies still spawning around you. Every fight after that is your choice. Dig the altar out, rebuild it in an open arena with room to fly, and the boss becomes a far easier encounter.

summoning it

The power cell only has to be somewhere in your inventory, not in your hand, and hitting the altar takes one and starts the fight on the spot. There is no confirmation, so do not lean on it while you are still laying platforms. If a world somehow ends up with no temple stone placed anywhere, Plantera drops an altar rather than leaving Golem unreachable.

the symbol

The stepped cross turning above it is a chakana, an Andean motif the Inca used, which fits the borrowed South American styling on the rest of the temple. Paint will not touch the glyph, so a repainted altar keeps its original floating symbol.
