the thrust is not the weapon
Poking with this is almost beside the point. Each stab leaves a cluster of spinning mushrooms hanging in the air roughly where you aimed, and they hurt anything that walks into them for about a second before fading. The visual fade is misleading: they deal full damage right up until they vanish.
Because the mushrooms apply no knockback, enemies wander straight into the cloud and keep taking hits instead of being shoved clear. That makes this an area denial tool. Face a chokepoint, stab into the doorway, and let things come to you. In an open arena where enemies approach from every direction, most of the mushrooms are wasted.
do not overstack melee speed
Attack speed helps up to a point and then works against you. Past roughly sixty percent bonus speed the spear starts dropping mushrooms from each thrust, so a heavily stacked melee speed build can end up producing less total damage than a moderate one. It is one of the few weapons where you should think twice before adding another speed accessory.
getting it
The Truffle sells it after you have cleared a mechanical boss, which means building a surface mushroom biome and housing him first. It is a straight coin purchase with no farming attached, and by the time it unlocks you can usually afford it in one trip.
