Dropped by
getting one
It drops from the Ice Queen during a Frost Moon, and the wave you are on changes how willing she is to part with it, so one run pushed deep is worth more than several short ones. For reforging, Godly and Demonic come out even on average output, so keep whichever appears first.
what a thrust actually does
Every poke launches an icy spear that carries on past the first thing it hits, and that spear sheds a trail of snowflakes behind it as it flies. The snowflakes fall straight down and damage whatever they land on. Nearly all of the weapon's real output lives in that falling curtain rather than in the spear, which is the thing to understand before you judge how it feels in your hand.
point it at the sky
The strongest use is to aim straight up in open ground. The spear climbs, the snow it shed on the way rains back down over everything beneath you, and against something large or stationary that piles up faster than the better known melee weapons of the same tier. Celestial pillars, slow bosses and anything that has to stand still and take it will fold to this. It looks like a trick and it is simply the correct way to hold the weapon.
melee speed changes it more than you expect
Melee speed bonuses do several things here at once. They swing it faster, which fires more spears, and they also push each spear further and faster and extend the reach of the thrust itself. That makes attack speed the stat to stack rather than raw damage, and it is why the weapon feels sluggish in a build that ignores it entirely.
where it stops working
Ceilings. Indoors or in a corridor the spear dies against the first block and the snow has nothing to fall from, which strips out most of the damage. The spear also refuses to launch at all if something solid sits in front of the tip when the thrust finishes, so poking around a corner achieves nothing. Underwater everything slows and drops early: the range collapses, but the snowflakes bunch into a tighter cluster, which is occasionally what you want in a flooded arena and usually not.
who it is for
Crowded events in the open. Anything that sends waves at you across a flat arena is where it stops behaving like a spear and starts behaving like area denial, and it is one of the reasons the two moon events become manageable. Against a single fast target that keeps darting in and out of the snow it is much less impressive, and a straight melee weapon does more.
trivia
- The name is a double pun. A spear is a pole, and the drop comes from the Christmas themed event.
- It glows in the dark and throws off light while you swing it, so it doubles as a lantern in a pinch.
- There is unused code that would give it a sword style slash arc. It is disabled, and in the files it appears blue at a default size.
