Every extra line the Traveling Merchant carries widens the pool he rolls from, and the items worth buying from him are the rare ones, so this improves your odds on every visit for the rest of the world. The benefit compounds, which means using it the day you can beats saving it.

• It attaches to the world, not to your character. Carrying the same character into a fresh world gets you nothing there and you will need to shimmer another hat.
• Using it while the merchant is already standing in your base does nothing for that visit. The change only shows up from the next one onward, so there is no reason to rush.

One use per world and that is the end of it. There is no stacking a second.
