Food never drops from statue spawns, so wiring up a Hoplite statue and standing there produces nothing. You have to fight the ones that generate naturally, which means going into a marble cave and clearing it the slow way.

It grants the strongest food buff, and marble caves are somewhere you want to visit anyway for the gladiator gear and the shield. Hoplites charge and lob javelins in high arcs, so fighting them on a flat floor is a bad idea. Medusas will petrify you if you are in their line of sight when they wind up, and the counter is a block between you and them rather than more defense. Clear one cave properly and you usually leave with enough food for several boss attempts.
