Nearly anything you kill can leave one, with a condition attached: the game only rolls for it when the closest player is short on mana. Sit at full and enemies stop producing them completely. They are not items you carry either. Touching one drinks it on the spot, there is no way to stockpile them, and one that lands out of reach is simply gone. A Star Statue spawns them too, which is how you build a fixed refill point into an arena.

This is the reason mana potions feel optional for most of a playthrough. Anywhere there is a steady stream of enemies, magic effectively costs nothing: casting drops you below full, the next kill tops you back up, and the loop holds as long as things keep dying. Where it breaks is a boss fight with no adds, because nothing is dying and nothing is refilling you. That specific gap is what potions, a Mana Flower and cost reduction gear are actually for, so it is worth checking which fights ahead of you have minions before deciding you can skip them.

The default grab radius is small enough that stars pile up out of reach whenever you kill things at distance, which is most of the time for a mage. A Celestial Magnet fixes that, and its upgrades keep the pull while adding other effects, which is why that accessory line stays equipped for so long. In multiplayer the drop keys off whoever is closest to the kill, so a mage hanging at the back while a melee player tanks the front is starving themselves of refills.

Around Halloween the same pickup appears as a soul cake, and around Christmas as a sugar plum. Nothing about the function changes. Celebration Mk 10 and Zenith worlds shuffle all three together year round. Both names come from real traditions. Soul cakes were baked for Allhallowtide and handed to people who went door to door praying for the dead, a custom usually named as the ancestor of trick or treating. Sugar plums were hard sugar coated sweets that stuck to Christmas through the Nutcracker and the poem that gave us the night before Christmas.
