This is the Crimson's spider, and it turns up far more often down in the chasms than up on the surface. Spawn odds jump several times over on any tile backed by a wall, and a chasm is wall from top to bottom, so a trip down one means a steady stream of them dropping in rather than the odd single you meet walking around above ground.
fighting and avoiding them
- They walk on background walls, so ground level cover is not cover. Watch the ceiling and behind you while you dig sideways through a chasm.
- Like every spider in the game they cannot get up a vertical shaft two tiles wide. If you are mining down and want a safe way back out, keep the shaft narrow and nothing follows you up it.
- They hit like the pre-Hardmode enemy they are, but the chasm delivers them in groups, so a weapon with some width beats a fast single target one in here.
