Dune Splicer spawns as 3 variants that share one bestiary entry; each row is one variant's exact stats.

Banner

Every 50th kill of this enemy drops Dune Splicer Banner.

where it comes from

There are two ways to meet a Dune Splicer and they feel completely different. Underground it starts appearing roughly a hundred tiles below the desert surface and gets steadily more common the deeper you push, with no cap on how many are alive at once. Above ground it needs a Sandstorm, and while the storm is running only a handful can exist at a time. The surface version is how most players first see one, because a Sandstorm turns an ordinary desert crossing into a running fight.

what stops it spawning

It obeys the tighter spawn checks like other burrowing enemies. A town NPC settled nearby suppresses it, standing in front of your own safe background walls suppresses it, and the game wants to see recent input from you rather than an idle character. Carrying or placing a Shadow Candle waives all of that if you actually want them coming.

fighting it

This is the biggest worm in the game outside the bosses, and the size is the threat. It turns far more sharply than something that long should be able to, and the Underground Desert is full of narrow passages where there is simply nowhere to be when it arrives. A Sandstorm makes it worse: the storm raises its top speed and acceleration until only the Phantasm Dragon outruns it. Fight it in open sand if you have the choice, and dig yourself a room rather than backing down a tunnel. The head is the soft spot, carrying much less armor than the body and tail, so pierce weapons aimed at the front do far more than raking the middle. That is also the segment that hurts most on contact, so the trade is real and you need somewhere to move after the hit lands.

context and naming

It is the Hardmode replacement for the Tomb Crawler, so if the pre-Hardmode desert already gave you trouble, expect the same fight with far less room for error. The name and the bestiary line about spice are a nod to the sandworms of Dune.
