where they come from
Leeches do not spawn anywhere on their own. The Wall of Flesh spits them out of its mouth during the fight, a few at a time to start with, then in larger and more frequent batches as it loses health, until near the end they arrive as an unbroken stream. The timing is the problem, because the point where they are thickest is also the point where you are dodging the eyes and running out of hell to run across.
they are your healing
In Classic every one of them leaves a heart behind, so the boss supplies your recovery for the whole fight. Expert cuts that to a fraction, which is a large part of why the same fight feels so much harsher there. Clear a flat run of bridge before you start so the hearts land where you can grab them on the way back rather than in lava.
notes
- Piercing weapons handle them without costing you damage on the Wall.
- They burrow silently, with none of the noise or debris other tunneling enemies throw off, so they close without warning.
- They do not vanish when the Wall dies. Finishing the fight does not clear the field.
