The Aether

The AetherWorld and biomes

what the aether is

The Aether is a single cave pocket that every world built in 1.4.4 or later gets exactly one of. You usually notice it before you reach it, because the background drops to black and fills with colored stars, the same view you get from Space except you are hundreds of feet underground. In the middle sits a pool of Shimmer, ringed by gem trees, with Faelings drifting above the water. The starfield paints over unlit tiles as well, so an approaching Aether reads as a wall of stars rather than as dark rock.

Worlds generated before 1.4.4 do not have one and never will. Terrain is written once at creation and updating the game does not go back and add anything.

narrowing down where to dig

Two facts cut the search down to a slice of the map. The Aether shares a side of the world with the Jungle, and it sits in the outer fifth of the map, past where most people bother to explore. Vertically it wants the middle band of the underground, below the halfway point between the Underground and Cavern boundaries, and it will not place itself within about 430 tiles of the true bottom of the world.

So head to the jungle end, keep going until the compass reading stops climbing, and sink a wide shaft through the underground and cavern layers. You are looking for the background change, not for the pool itself.

There is also a seed trick worth knowing. The Guide who spawns with a fresh world draws from a fixed list of names, and that name maps to a horizontal position for the first spot the game tried to place the Aether. It is not a guarantee, since a spot blocked by Ebonstone or Crimstone gets rejected and the search moves elsewhere, but on most worlds it points you close.

what shimmer is actually for

Shimmer is the reason to come. Drop an item into the pool and it changes. Most crafted things come apart into what went into them, which is how you turn a wasted armor set back into bars, and a shorter list of items convert into something else entirely instead. The headline case is the Rod of Discord, which comes out as the Rod of Harmony and stops charging you health to teleport.

Town NPCs react too. Nudge one in and they come back with an alternate look, which is cosmetic and reversible. Falling in yourself is safe and worth doing once: you sink through solid blocks instead of swimming, drift down through the world, and get put back at your spawn point when you reach the bottom.

it runs out

Until the Moon Lord is dead, that pool is every drop of Shimmer the world has, and nothing refills it. Do not run a hellevator through it, do not bury it under a botched build, and do not start a pump line you have not thought all the way through. Once the Moon Lord falls the Bottomless Shimmer Bucket makes supply irrelevant, but that is a long way from your first visit.

The biome check itself only cares about volume and depth. Pool up 300 tiles of Shimmer at least 50 tiles under the surface layer and clear of the very bottom of the world, and the game treats that spot as an Aether, stars and all.

the pylon and the monolith

The Aether Pylon is the one piece of the teleport network that does not need its biome to sit where the biome normally can. The game counts an Aether for pylon purposes even on the surface or down in the Underworld, so a small artificial pool next to your base gives you a working pylon without a trek every time you want to use it.

The Aether Monolith handles the other half. It switches the starfield off when the black background makes building awkward, and switches it on anywhere else if you want the effect somewhere it does not belong.

the name

In Greek myth, Aether is the bright upper air above the clouds, which fits a place that shows you the sky from the bottom of a cave. The spelling keeps the old ligature form of the word rather than the modern ether.
