a planting tool more than a weapon
Point it at bare soil and you get a tree line without walking the row and clicking each tile. That is the real use. The shots arc, so ranging across a valley takes a couple of tries, and anything that is not plantable ground just sends them bouncing along until they run out of energy and drop back as items you can pick up. Very little gets wasted.
why your saplings never grow
The acorn only checks whether it can physically sit somewhere: flat unsloped ground, two tiles of clear air overhead, no water in the way. It does not check spacing. So it will happily plant a row packed far too tightly for any of them to become trees, and you get a line of saplings that sit there forever. If a stretch you shot refuses to grow, thin it by hand instead of firing more.
limits worth knowing
Ammo conservation accessories do nothing here, and gemcorns are not valid ammo, so the gem trees still go in one at a time by hand. Hitting an enemy destroys the shot outright rather than dropping it, which is another reason to think of this as garden equipment that happens to do damage.
where it came from
It arrived as a nod to the Great Tree versus Axe stunt of 2023, a community fundraiser several of the developers took part in, and it went to the side that was doing the planting.
