Write on it like a sign, wire it, and the text prints into the chat log whenever the circuit fires. That makes it the standard way to label a build for visitors, warn someone before they step onto a pressure plate, or give a multiplayer world a bit of scripted narration. Tags work inside the text, so you can color individual words or drop item icons into a line.

Chat holds only a handful of lines at once and a bank of boxes on a timer will fill every one of them. Because item tags all occupy the same width, you can abuse that into a crude flip book animation, with wall tiles being the best pieces since they read as solid squares. It is a fun trick on a solo world and an excellent way to make yourself unwelcome on a shared one, since nobody else can get a word in and everyone misses the game's own status messages.

Wire one to a time sensor and any event announcement tied to that moment fires first, so your message lands underneath it rather than instead of it.

If someone is abusing them on a server you run, the game can be launched with a switch that turns the boxes off entirely.
