The only real differences are what it costs and where you build it. This halves the metal, which matters on a fresh world where every bar is already spoken for, but it wants a sawmill rather than a work bench, so it is not the first storage you can put down. Once dressers are available the metal question disappears entirely, at the cost of floor space.

You cannot pick it up while anything is inside. Empty it first, or you will stand there swinging a pickaxe at a full one and wondering why the block will not break.
