Fishing hands you far more spare fish than the quests ever ask for, and cooking the leftovers is the obvious use for them. What you get sits on the bottom rung of the food ladder, the plain Well Fed tier, which lifts almost every stat a little regardless of what class you play. The gap between eating nothing and eating anything is much wider than the gap between one food tier and the next, so it is worth keeping a stack in easy reach and topping the buff up whenever it lapses rather than saving the good food for later.
