Like other crafted walls, this one satisfies the wall requirement for an NPC room and stops enemies spawning on the tiles it covers. That is the split between a wall you place and the natural background you dig into, and when you are lining an arena or sealing a base perimeter it matters far more than the pattern does.
One quirk when you go hunting for the recipe: the wall does not carry the name of the block that makes it. Search the crafting list by the wall name instead of by the material or you will scroll past it.
