what it does
A planter box is a strip of soil you can put anywhere, including hanging in mid air, and any herb seed will grow in it. Since 1.4.5 the Dryad stocks the full set from the day she moves in, so there is no longer a boss standing between you and the box you want. Left empty on the surface or in space, a box eventually sprouts wild grass on its own.
the variants are cosmetic
Daybloom seeds grow just as happily in a Fireblossom box, and matching the seed to the artwork gives you nothing at all. The one variant with any real difference is the Deathweed box, which shows either Corrupt or Crimson grass depending on which evil your world rolled, and even that is only artwork.
it behaves like a platform
- Nothing has to hold it up, you can walk along the top, and pressing down drops you through.
- It cannot be hammered into slopes or stairs. Smart Cursor always lays boxes in a dead flat line, which is handy for leveling out lumpy ground where normal platforms fight you.
- Torches and tombstones can go directly on top of one.
- Lava flows through without destroying the box. That makes a planter box floor genuinely useful in a Wall of Flesh arena on Expert, where dying Lava Slimes keep splashing lava across the track.
harvesting what you plant
A herb in a box ignores the usual trick of swinging a tool near it. A pickaxe or drill takes it at any stage. The Staff of Regrowth and the Axe of Regrowth only take it once it has bloomed, but they put it back in the ground for you afterwards. Holding the matching seeds while you harvest replants automatically as well, and neither approach smashes the blocks and unbloomed plants around it, which is the main reason to grow herbs in boxes at all.
