The Skeleton Merchant only carries it during the back half of the lunar cycle, so finding him is not enough. If he is standing there and the yoyo is not in his list, note the moon and come back on a later night. Check his stock every single time you run into him underground, since he wanders off and you have no way to call him back.

It stays out long enough to hold a target through most of an exchange instead of snapping back mid-fight, and it travels quickly enough to reach things before they reach you. That makes it a reasonable purchase for a yoyo build waiting on a jungle drop that will not come, though it is a stopgap rather than an endpoint.

The game tags it with a color reserved for late pre-Hardmode gear even though you cannot buy it until Hardmode. Comparing yoyos by tooltip color will steer you wrong here.
