Gold and platinum are the top of the ore broadswords, and this is usually the last sword you craft before a boss drop or a chest find replaces it. Its swing covers real space, so a crowd of slimes or a line of zombies dies without you having to walk into each one the way a shortsword forces.
It is not worth a dedicated mining trip. If the ore is already in your chest, make the sword. If you are still on silver, your time goes further hunting an Enchanted Sword shrine or beating the Eye of Cthulhu for something that throws a projectile.
