Gold Greaves

Gold armor is the last of the plain ore sets, and the honest reason to build it is that nothing better exists until a boss drops something. Mining enough for all three pieces is a real expedition, and the same ore is wanted for early tools and furniture, so most players finish the helmet and chest first and come back for the legs. A world that rolled Platinum gets that set instead, which is the same idea with slightly more defense.

The Ancient Gold Helmet wears the old pre 1.0.3 sprite and behaves identically, so it is a look rather than an upgrade. Skeletons and Spore Skeletons drop it rarely underground, and a normal helmet dropped into Shimmer swaps between the two versions. It still appears in platinum worlds, which is the only way to get the gold look in a world that never generated the ore.

Treat this as a stepping stone. Breaking shadow orbs or crimson hearts opens up Demonite and Crimtane gear, and a trip to hell puts you in Molten armor, where pre-Hardmode defense actually peaks. A spare set is still worth leaving in a chest for a friend rolling a new character.

Before the developer had a set of his own, his in game outfit was this helmet worn with the Frost Breastplate and Frost Leggings, all of it dyed black and blue. Up to 1.3 that specific combination produced an afterimage and a pulsing aura on its own, close to what Hallowed armor does.
