Gravedigger's Shovel
Digs in a bigger area than a pickaxe Only digs up soft tiles 'Can you dig it?'
How to craft it
what it is actually for
This is a terraforming tool, not a mining upgrade. One swing clears a small square of loose ground around the cursor, so it eats through dirt, mud, sand, ash, silt and clay far faster than any pickaxe can. It does nothing useful against stone or ore, so it rides alongside your pickaxe rather than replacing it.
- Tunneling across the Underground Jungle, where mud is what slows you down more than the enemies.
- Clearing ash on a hell run so you can reach Hellstone veins quickly.
- Bulk sand for bottles and glass, and bulk silt or slush to feed the Extractinator.
- Stripping clay when a build needs a lot of red brick.
notes
It carries a hidden trace of pickaxe power, which means mining speed gear on your accessories and armor still speeds it up. Roll Light if you only ever dig with it. Legendary only matters if you plan to swing it at something living, which is rarely the plan.
The tooltip borrows a piece of mid-century slang that turns up in music and film from the fifties onward.
