it removes a whole resource problem
Vines normally break into nothing. Wear this and they come back as usable rope. Jungle and forest ceilings are covered in them and they grow back on their own, so a few minutes of swinging around cave roofs fills a stack. On a large world a single hellevator eats a serious amount of ordinary rope, and this takes that cost off the table permanently. Finding one early changes how freely you can explore deep caves before you have a decent hook.
the fine print
- Only ordinary vines and jungle vines count. The other hanging plants give you nothing.
- In single player it does not matter how the vine died. Mining the block it hangs from works, and so does a minion clipping it while shooting at something behind it.
- In multiplayer the game credits whoever is standing nearest the vine, not whoever destroyed it. If a friend is quietly collecting your rope, that is why.
finding one
Surface chests hold it often enough that a normal opening sweep of the world will usually turn one up. If it does not, the Skeleton Merchant stocks it, though only on the right moon phase, so that route means checking in on him across several nights.
