where the name comes from
The phrase started out as a name for the strange lights that hover over peat bogs at night, the same thing people meant by will-o'-the-wisp. The carved pumpkin came later, out of an Irish story about a man who cheated the devil, was turned away from both places when he died, and got sent off to wander with an ember inside a hollowed turnip.
