How to craft it
how the display works
Open one the way you would open a chest and a small panel appears under your inventory. Three slots take head, shirt and pants, five take accessories, and one takes a weapon, with a dye slot sitting under everything except the weapon. Whatever you drop in shows up on the figure straight away, so you can build a display by dragging and check the result without leaving the panel. Later versions let it hold items and mounts as well, minecarts included, which turns it into a general trophy stand rather than an armor rack.
getting it back off the wall
You cannot pick one up while anything is still on it. If one refuses to break, empty every slot first, dye slots included. The upside is that a display in a shared world cannot be knocked down by an errant pickaxe swing.
posing
Hit one with any hammer and it changes pose, and the weapon it holds moves with it. That is the difference between a wall of identical statues and something that reads as a real armory, so it is worth cycling each one until the arrangement looks deliberate.
the painting quirk
Paint behaves oddly here. Only the top left corner of the head registers, and coloring that single spot recolors the entire body. You can keep painting the rest of the figure afterward and it will happily consume the paint for no visible change, so do not bother. Illuminant Coating is the one exception worth spending, because it lights up the gear on display as well as the figure holding it, and that glow stacks with whatever your dyes are doing.
what it will not show
Familiar clothes cannot go on one. There are only ever five accessory slots regardless of how many your own character has unlocked, so a Master world loadout or a Demon Heart build cannot be mirrored exactly. Everything renders in its male sprite form too, so a set that looks different on a female character needs a Womannequin instead.
the scale of a full collection
Displaying every armor set in the game on its own stand, counting the interchangeable variants, runs to over one hundred and fifty of these and several thousand wood. Worth knowing before you start planning the room.
