getting the crash to happen
Beating the world evil boss schedules a meteor rather than dropping one on the spot. Finish the fight in the small hours before dawn and it lands right away; finish it at any other time and you are waiting for the next midnight. If you want the ore quickly, time the kill.
the block hurts
Standing on the ore burns you, and neither water nor honey stops that. An Obsidian Skull or the potion equivalent turns the site from a hazard into an ordinary mining job. Bring one rather than chipping at the edges from a distance and healing between swings.
pickaxe requirement
The tier check is strict, and one of the two early metals fails it by a hair, so a world that rolled Silver rather than Tungsten needs you to move up a step before the crash site opens up. Explosives are not a shortcut either, at least not before Hardmode.
spawning your own
Enough of the ore placed in one spot converts the area into a meteorite biome, and every spawn there becomes a Meteor Head. That is either a farm or an accident depending on where you stacked it, so keep the stockpile away from your base. Selling it raw is also a mistake, since smelting first is worth noticeably more for the same material.
