Pure decoration. It puts a glowing heart crystal on display, which is what people want for a trophy room or a shelf above the bed. Smashing it hands the crystal straight back, so parking one in your base is a loan rather than a cost, and you can always break it and drink it if a run goes badly.

Nothing was ever broken. The crystal you feed into it looks intact in your inventory, so there is nothing to repair. The inventory icon also shows it resting on a small silver stand that quietly disappears the moment you place it down.
