The name misleads people constantly. Nothing put inside is deleted, it holds a full chest worth of slots, and the metal detector counts it as a chest when it pings nearby objects. The only differences that matter are the sprite and the fact that you cannot pick it back up until you have emptied it.

It eats several times the iron or lead a plain chest wants, and it wants that metal at exactly the stage of a run where every bar is already spoken for by a forge, an anvil and a grappling hook. Build one for the look, or for the joke of labelling the box where your junk goes. Wood chests, barrels and dressers do the same job for a fraction of the effort.

Wire it up and a signal makes it suck in loose items from a short radius around itself. That turns it into a collection point underneath an AFK farm, which is the first genuine argument for placing one over a normal chest.
