Banner

Every 50th kill of this enemy drops Face Monster Banner.

where it comes from

Nothing summons it. It appears on its own wherever the Crimson has taken hold, with no event and no progression gate in front of it, so a world that generated Crimson will hand you one within your first few days. The only real way to stop them showing up near your base is to deal with the biome itself.

it is not a zombie

The silhouette invites the comparison and the fight does not support it. Knockback barely registers, so the starting weapons that keep a Zombie pinned at swing range will not hold this one off. It walks into you while you hit it and trades damage the whole way. Most players learn that in a single exchange.

It also opens doors whenever it likes, and it does not clear out at sunrise the way Zombies do. A door and good intentions is not a wall. If you are living next to the Crimson, build a real one.

terrain notes

  • It reads as four tiles tall and still fits through a three tile gap, so a low crawlspace is not the barrier it looks like.
  • Remix worlds more than double its top speed, which turns a slow shambler into something you cannot simply walk away from.
  • It drops Vertebra often enough that any trip into the biome doubles as a stock-up for the recipes that want them.

trivia

The Crimson normally mirrors the Corruption creature for creature, and this one has no opposite number. Crimera answers the Eater of Souls; the Face Monster answers nothing. The lore has it as a person who worshipped the Crimson and was offered to it, then rebuilt as part of the hive. On the 3DS version its idle noise plays at random even when none are nearby.
