Toggles

TogglesSystems

the row of icons beside your inventory

Toggles are the small buttons next to the inventory that switch individual abilities on and off. A few are always present. The rest appear only once you have the item that provides them, whether that is held in your inventory, equipped, already consumed, or sitting in the Void Vault while your Void Bag is open. The vault case is the useful one, since it lets a toggle item grant its function from storage instead of occupying a slot you need.

Reading their state takes a little practice. Some have a distinct off icon. The rest simply dim. On desktop the default set sits to the left of the main inventory, while PDA toggles move around with your UI scale and resolution, landing either below the minimap or beside the armor slots. On mobile they all live in the tools panel under the inventory.

the three you always have

Block Swap replaces a placed tile with the one you are holding instead of making you break it first. Most people leave it on permanently, but it is worth switching off when you are working somewhere a stray click should do nothing at all.

Hotbar Lock changes what a click on the hotbar means. Unlocked, clicking a slot selects the item in it, which sounds harmless until you are aiming a ranged weapon toward the top left of the screen and your shot turns into a slot change instead. Locked, hotbar clicks pass through and use your held item like any other click. If a weapon has ever seemed to stop firing at one specific angle, this is why.

The Ruler draws a measured line from your character out to the cursor. It is the fastest way to place a block at an exact distance, and it pairs well with Smart Cursor, which otherwise has a habit of running platforms off in a direction you did not intend.

visibility, one per slot

Each accessory slot carries its own visibility button in the top right corner, and so does every pet and light pet slot. Turning it off hides that accessory on your character, and for pets it goes further and stops the pet being summoned at all. That is the switch for keeping the stats from wings without the wings showing, or for clearing a pet off the screen during a fight. Vanity accessory slots ignore the setting and always display.

toggles that come with items

Combined tools carry the toggles of everything inside them. The Grand Design and the Cell Phone each hand you the full set from their components, so crafting the upgrade costs you no control.

The Mechanical Lens is the most configurable of the lot. Each wire color and the actuator layer gets three display states: bright, drawn at full brightness no matter how dark the room is; classic, lit like anything else; and faded, which is classic with transparency added so you can see the blocks underneath. Above those sits a display mode with two positions, one showing wiring only while you hold a mechanism item and one forcing it visible always. Forced is what you want while auditing a circuit somebody else built, since you can walk the whole thing without holding a wiring tool the entire time.

the rest

  • PvP and team buttons only exist in multiplayer, sitting beside the armor slots on desktop and in the player menu on mobile.
  • Using a Minecart Upgrade Kit adds a toggle at the minecart slot for its effect.
  • The Torch God's Favor adds its own once consumed, which is how you stop torches recoloring themselves in a biome where you wanted the plain ones.
  • Unused toggle icons sit in the game files for the Ruler, the Mechanical Ruler, the Presserator, the Paint Sprayer and each of the four wire colors, which points at a layout that was reworked before release.
