what it does

A timer pulses the wire attached to it on a fixed beat for as long as it is switched on. Press open or activate on the timer to toggle it by hand, or run a Switch onto the same Wire and flip it from somewhere else. Two timers sitting on one circuit will keep switching each other on and off, which is either a bug in your build or the entire point of it.

placing them

Timers no longer need anything to attach to, so you can drop one in open air and then build platforms and walls off it. Once placed they sit in the background layer, which means nothing collides with them and players and creatures walk straight through the tile.

chaining for longer delays

If one timer triggers a second timer of the same length, the second fires first and shuts the first one off before it can come round again. Stack a few of those and you get one long delay instead of a repeating pulse, which is how most delayed door and trap sequences are built. If you want the whole chain to repeat on its combined length, wire the last timer back into the first one.

things that catch people out

  • Leaving the world and coming back switches every timer off. Anything that has to keep running needs restarting by hand, so put a switch somewhere you will actually remember.
  • For pulses faster than the shortest timer you are into Crab Engine and Bird Engine territory instead.
  • Buying this one from the Mechanic costs less than the Gold Bars needed to craft it are worth on their own. Sell the bars and buy the timer.
  • The one, three and five second timers will not break down in Shimmer. That is deliberate, since buying and decrafting them in a loop would turn coins into ore bars without anyone mining anything.
