why you would craft it
Boreal Wood comes off the trees in a snow biome, so this is the armor you make when your spawn happens to sit near ice. The three pieces cost nothing but a morning of chopping, and wearing all of them at once adds a little more protection on top of what the parts give separately. It covers the first few nights of slimes and zombies and nothing past that. Once you have smelted enough copper or tin, move up and forget it.
the wood sets are the same armor
The Palm Wood and Rich Mahogany versions protect exactly as well, so crossing the map for a particular tree is wasted effort. Craft whichever grows near your house. What separates this one is the head: the horns on the helmet give it a Viking look close to the Viking Helmet, which is why it tends to outlive its usefulness in a social slot long after the defense stopped counting.
