the gear is a small step up

Tools, weapons and armor made from snow wood come out slightly ahead of the plain wood versions. The gap is narrow enough that it only matters for the first ten minutes of a fresh character, but if you spawned near the snow it costs nothing to start there instead. After the first ore set, none of it is relevant again.

farming it

Acorns planted on snow blocks grow boreal trees, so a row next to the base removes the walk. Underground cabins in the ice caves are the other easy source, usually as flooring you can rip up on your way past. Both beat clearing the surface biome tree by tree if you want it in bulk for building.
