where they come from
Books are a dungeon resource. They sit on the shelves down there and come loose with a pickaxe, which is why most players end up stripping every library room they walk past. Now that the Wizard stocks them, that is optional: if you only want the furniture, buying is faster than mining and does not involve fighting anything.
A complete set of bookcases and pianos runs to several hundred books, so completing the furniture is a shopping trip rather than something you finish by accident while clearing the dungeon. Crates fished out of dungeon water are the third route and the least effort per book if you were going to fish anyway.
the one on the shelf that is not a book
The Water Bolt hides among them with a slightly different sprite. Free it and it does not behave like a placeable block at all, it goes into your inventory as a weapon, and it is one of the strongest things a character can be holding before the walls go up. Look at the shelves before you mine one out in a single pass.
