Sand is one of the few things you never run short of, so glass is the cheapest bulk building block in the game once you have a furnace up. Light passes through it, which no other common block does, so a glass roof lets daylight into a room instead of forcing you to line it with torches, and a glass floor over a lava layer lets you see what is underneath.
