Cattiva will fight for you
finding one
This is not crafted and it is not a drop. It walks around in the world as a rare daytime encounter, standing on grass, jungle grass, snow or ice, and it will not appear in a graveyard or anywhere in the middle stretch of the map. That last rule matters more than it sounds: hunting near your spawn point is wasted time, and you want to be out toward one end of the world.
The Lifeform Analyzer picks it up, but the free tell is audio. Two goblin archers appear alongside it, and their presence switches the music over to the goblin army theme for no other reason, so invasion music starting in a quiet forest means one is nearby.
the rescue
It starts as a distressed animal rather than an item, pinned in place by the archers. Kill them, or let them wander off and despawn, then walk within a few tiles and it drops into your inventory as a summon staff. Occasionally the detection sticks and it just sits there with the archers already dead. Walking out of range and coming back, without going far enough for it to vanish, usually shakes it loose. It also needs room: if the game cannot find two suitable ledges to put the archers on, the whole encounter cancels itself on the spot.
tilting the odds
Good luck works against you here. The roll is between this and Foxparks, and higher luck pushes the result toward Foxparks, so deliberately tanking your luck with a cursed accessory or the stinky debuff improves the odds. It is one of the very few moments in the game where you want to be unlucky. Only one distressed animal of either kind can exist at a time, so if one is already out there somewhere, nothing new will generate.
To farm it, build a long flat platform on the surface with an artificial jungle underneath, then run water candles and battle potions on top of that. Daylight only, so there is nothing to gain from sitting out there at night.
how the minion fights
One at a time, always, no matter how much minion capacity you have stacked up. It runs and jumps to its target and only deals damage during a short claw swipe at close range, so it wants to be in melee and loses time crossing the room to get there. What it does once it arrives is hit very fast, with its own short immunity window per target, landing many small hits rather than a few large ones.
That profile decides how you build around it. Flat damage added to each hit is worth far more to it than percentage bonuses, so whips with heavy tag damage like the Spinal Tap and the armor penetration from a Shark Tooth Necklace do most of the work. It behaves much like an early version of the Blade Staff. Fabled is the modifier to aim for.
it also digs
It mines beside you at roughly iron pickaxe strength and chops trees at about gold axe strength, working either the same tile you are on or something close by, and it keeps going for a while after you stop as long as you stay in the area. On a long tunneling session that is a genuine second pair of hands rather than a novelty. You can pet it, and it borrows your sunglasses if you are wearing any.
