Explosive Bunny

It starts as a live rabbit. Catch one with any Bug Net and it becomes a crafting ingredient, which is the whole supply line now that the Pirate no longer stocks them. Release one back out and it hops around like any other critter, except that it always drops at your feet rather than at the cursor, which is exactly the wrong place for it.

Kill one and it goes off. The blast covers a square of ground, leaves the terrain intact, and hurts you far more than it hurts anything hostile in range. Shooting a critter standing next to you is one of the sillier ways to lose a character in this game. The Guide to Critter Companionship does not protect you either, since it will not stop your own attacks from setting one off the way it does for ordinary critters.

Packing a pen full of these next to a boss used to end the fight instantly, and it was a real opener for Journey mode speedruns. The explosion now grants a brief stretch of invulnerability, so a whole pile detonating together registers as a single hit. The damage number is genuine, the highest of anything you can fire on most platforms, it just cannot be stacked any more.

• Loaded into a Bunny Cannon it will not hurt you, which is the only deliberately safe way to set one off. Current versions no longer use it as that cannon's ammunition.
• On a For the Worthy world most of the rabbits you meet are secretly these, including ones you released yourself, so walking up to a bunny becomes an actual decision.
• Ones produced by a Bunny Statue on that seed are harmless when killed, which makes a statue the safe way to farm bunnies there.
• Gold and gem rabbits are exempt from the swap, so a shiny one is still just a shiny one.
